Hydrogen Peroxide Awareness

Uses of hydrogen peroxide include homemade disinfectants and hand sanitizers and for wound care. Take note, however, of concoctions that include hydrogen Peroxide as it can burn skin tissue.

For wounds, per Dr. Rachel Rader, DPM, “The bactericidal effects of the hydrogen peroxide are great to clean the wound and kill bacteria initially, but this same benefit comes with a price in that the peroxide can damage skin cells and angiogenesis which is the process of new vessel formation.”

As a disinfectant, we have seen, for example, a do it yourself bathroom disinfectant and mold prevention concoction that recommends one part hydrogen peroxide and two parts water. Then to spray and allow to sit for one hour before rinsing completely.

If heading in such a direction, it is wise to know that the hydrogen peroxide can cause harm to the tissues of a pet’s pads as well as the tender skin of a small child. Use sparingly to prevent pooling of the peroxide solution and after use wipe down the surfaces with mild soap.
