Plant your Feet

For the past few months, I’ve been listening to my body send its little messages of pain about my left knee. I’m listening to Miranda, the Essentrics teacher, to remember how important the alignment between the arch, ankle, knee and hip is for balance and to enjoy pain free movement. I know how flexing the feet and allowing them to move easily helps with all that, but what I didn’t pay attention to within myself is pronation. It comes up a lot in giving advice to others, but I didn’t quite catch was happening to my own body.

Then I put it together. I had recently and been delightfully wearing my quite flexible wool slippers around the house. And I remembered that when I spent a lot of time outside wearing hard soled slip on shoes my knee didn’t hurt. So I bought a another pair of the slip ons, ones with a clean sole, to experiment wearing them around the house. Voila, no knee pain! I am now wearing them when appropriate around the house, out in the yard and in the basement.

I like to experiment with myself on various issues and how they can help others in the process. I had completely forgotten about pronation, but now that I’m not rolling my foot out, I have far fewer alignment reminder twinges from my body.

I once loved running and was naturally a rather decent distance runner. Distance as in maximum 13 miles, not more. In any case, well, at some point running stopped feeling quite as good and being as much fun.

After a 20-year hiatus I recently started to give it a go again. A rather slow jog go, but a go. It was not a comfortable experience in that it hurt one of my hips a bit.

What do you know, I learned that my foot on that side was turned out as I hoofed it, adjusted to plant it straight in front of me and now i jog without hip pain.

Love easy fixes.
