The Phases of Motivation: Exercise

Over time, we often find changing motivations for the topics in our lives. These are observations regarding exercise motivations, for at least some of us:

Through the Teen Years

Movement is simply what people do if given the opportunity.

Teens – Age 30-ish

Hormones. Cannot sit still.

Age 30 – 55-ish

Some level of vanity creates much of the get up and go. And we like that the endorphins help to relieve stress.

Age 55-ish & Forward

Gosh, with wisdom, we are (almost) beyond vanity and with a few years on the books we are beyond the hormone driver (at least the age 30 ones). Now we simply feel better to really good with exercise. We remember that the whole body and mind benefits and it increases the ability to fight off disease. We feel certain that the strength will keep us doing (almost) everything until our last moments. And while we might have always been quite limber, we now also really need to stretch.

Just is.
