Fun in the Summer Sun

We are very big fans of the sun, but on our terms, when and where we want it. Ideally, we would spend approximately 20 minutes getting top to bottom sunblock free sun each day.

We were meant to have sun. It helps regulate our circadian rhythm, boosts our immune system and natural Vitamin D.

Years ago the ozone used to protect us from the burning rays of the sun. Even Ginger, with red hair, did not burn with too much sun. Today, the ozone is reduced and for periods longer than the dose for health, sun protection is important.

Below are a few highlights and reminders.

Sunscreen

For sunblock, choose healthy mineral based sun lotion. The big brand sunblock products are filled with toxic ingredients that your skin loves to absorb. We like Mychelle’s sunblock. You can find it on their website (see below) and, at the time of this post, on Amazon.

Sun Hats, ~ Caryn

Hats with big brims are key. I like those from Sunday Afternoons. You can find their products at their website, www.sundayafternoons.com. And at the time of this post, select styles are available on Amazon.

Cooling Sun Sleeves, ~ Ginger

A few years ago, I was in Florida walking in the sun and realized that my sunscreen was not enough to keep my arms, neck and face from burning. After not finding anything at the local store to block the sun, I saw a parking lot attendant with these close-fitting white sleeves on his arm that extended from under his T shirt to his wrists.  I did research under multiple names and then found them online. The first few were good with the exception that the elastic at the top of the arm and wrist was either too tight or too loose. When loose they roll up into a ball or a tourniquet. Now they have improved the elastic. And with the addition of thumb holes, they suddenly became gardening cooling sun sleeves.

A few years ago there were only solid colors available, now they have prints. So, if you have ever wanted to see what your arm would look like with a Hummingbird tattooed on it, here’s your chance. The sleeves do keep you from burning and will keep you cool thanks to the breathable fabric.  After you’ve spent your time in the sun you can flip them into the washing machine on delicate and they will last many years.

A brand I like is Wellday and, at the time of this post, you can find them on Amazon. No burns, extended outside time and freedom to express your sunny self.
