Eating in Season Fruits & Vegetables
Due to the demands and wants of humans all over the world, we have a society that will eat fruits and vegetables that have been shipped thousands of miles. At first it seemed a great way to stretch any season and get plenty of produce on our plates.
However, when fruits and vegetables have to be shipped thousands of miles, they often have to be picked green in order to survive the trip. As a result, much of the produce that isn’t local in our grocery stores are not naturally ripened. Some are “gassed” before they are set out for sale. This gives the appearance of ripened, but instead it has rotted nutritionally. Others are held in cold storage for a very long time for slow ripening, but not the full benefits of naturally ripened fruit.
No, the cold stores things for a longer period and allows very slow ripening not allowing the full benefits of naturally ripened fruit. No the gas is a deception
For better health, look to see what grows naturally in your area. Or find a farmers’ market that specializes in local produce. Some produce is grown in green houses, but at least these are fully grown and ripe, ready to eat. And better produce might be just “up the hill.”
It is also best to buy organic to avoid pesticides and glyphosates as these are toxic and indigestible in the human body.
An additional benefit of buying local is that you are not contributing to the pollution created by shipping long distances. We all need cleaner air, even the plants we eat.
Local produce bought in season is ready to eat so should be consumed or canned right away. Enjoy all the delicious flavors of each season and feel better along the way.
