Holiday Anxiety

As we wind our way through the holiday fun we might also wind into schedules and demands that result in an anxiousness.

Performing traditions can fill us with stress and tension. We might be rushing to do to what we believe are unmet expectations of our own and others. Our people pleasing ways, beliefs and tendencies picked up from family and friends can drain our adrenals and create unnecessary headaches. Including for others in our circle.

We add food to the fire, pun intended, by creating sugary treats that first spike, then crash our glucose levels. (We also sometimes realize food sensitivities given we consume foods that we only eat during the holidays.)

We Can Choose

Instead of inviting anxiety, stop, scan, rewrite the holiday. Release all tension. For example, consider whether you are repeating traditions that do not suit you. If so, skip the traditions that do not suit you and instead create simple and enjoyable rituals and traditions of your own.

Regarding extra baked goods in the mix, you might bake with alternative sugar and flour choices and add more spices. Switch Grandma’s fruit cake recipe for the far healthier dried fruit, figs, dates and apricots. (Really does anyone actually love your homemade fruit cake? Asked with a smile.)

As for errands, one of us mails quite a few packages and realizes that there can be a lot of pile up at the post office. A more peaceful option is Staples as they take UPS, USPS and also process Amazon returns. In addition, Staples has longer hours.

Happy Choosing!
