Below are highlights from and a link to a November 2023 article about the benefits of coconut oil and olive oil by chiropractor Dr. Eric Berg. We found it a good summary. See the article for details and also links to additional information.
Summary; Both oils provide health benefits. Consuming both offers a “variety of healthy fats with a wide range of benefits for your heart, brain, and overall well-being.” Both support healthy cholesterol levels.
Product choice: for health and flavor, choose cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil and virgin coconut oil. More processing results in less benefit.
COCONUT OIL: extracted from the meat of mature coconuts.
Promotes heart health. Research suggests that coconut oil increases levels of HDL, the good cholesterol protecting your arteries and heart.
Boosts Immunity. Due to the lauric acid.
Supports Brain Health & Increases Energy. Due to the medium-chain triglycerides.
Cooking: can safely be heated to high temperatures
OLIVE OIL: made by extracting the oil from ripe olives.
Supports heart health. Due to the polyphenols and because “almost 80% of olive oil is monounsaturated fat, like oleic acid, which supports a healthy heart and may even have a beneficial impact on genes linked to cancer.”
Lowers inflammation. Due to Oleocanthal, a polyphenol found only in olive oil
Protects from cellular damage. Due to being a rich source of antioxidants that “protect your body from oxidative damage to DNA, proteins, and cells. Antioxidants in olive oil reduce the risk of prostate and colon cancer, lower the risk of chronic diseases, and have been found to slow visible signs of aging.”
