Intermittent Fasting for Women

If you are interested in intermittent fasting, you may have noticed many postings on the topic. Most of them have been by men. Then up popped Dr. Mindy H. Pelz D.C., a nutrition and functional health expert. She wrote “A Woman’s Guide to Using the Healing Power of Fasting to Burn Fat, Boost Energy, and Balance Hormones.” In it, she teaches

  • how to move from eating all day to intermittent fasting. This includes fasting for 13-15 hours of the day and, if you choose, up to 15-72 hours;
  • how to time fasting according to your menstrual cycle if you have one and also how to if you do not;
  • the best foods to break your fast to achieve better metabolic health.

The book includes 60 recipes based on two unique food plans that Dr. Pelz created to best support women’s hormones. The rules for hormone feasting include

  • consuming no more than 150 grams of net carbs per day;
  • focusing on nature’s carbohydrates such as root vegetables and fruits;
  • consuming no more than 50 grams of protein per day;
  • consuming healthy fats as desired.
