Infrared Sauna: Love it, Intially Overcooked

I had wanted an infrared sauna for quite a while, finally pounced after I discovered Heat Healer’s Sauna blanket, aka an infrared sleeping bag. Space wise, it is a no brainer and the health and heating specs checked out for me. They includes its EMF blocking technology, faraday shielding creates an EMF safe environment, crystals that emit negative ions and, per research, and now my experience, heats evenly throughout.

I read the instructions and began my intial session. The first day I spent approximately 15 minutes in it at a medium temperature. I did not “feel” anything and so the next day went all in with a bit too much enthusiasm. I relaxed in the blanket for 40 minutes at a medium high temperature. I loved the relaxation, still did not feel anything happening, did not sweat or otherwise “feel” an effect.

It turns out that for me I was in it too long for my second time and that I did not hydrate well enough. Starting approximately one hour later and for the next 24 hours by body reacted as if I was sick, went into protective healing mode as toxins began to purge. I was miserable. And my eyes we very dry, I could not wear my contacts, needed to keep my eyelids mostly closed. So, in fact, the infrared sauna did have an effect, lol.

I spent the next 24 hours snoozing and hydrating – water with mineral salt, water with lemon, coconut water. Coconut oil on my eyelids. In retrospect the 24 hours were like a break in a kiva.

The lesson for me? Take it slow initially, see how the body reacts and, of course, hydrate. Novel ideas. Despite the rocky start I look very forward to my next session. It will be short, with gradual time and heat increases.

Heat Healer Sauna Blanket Cons:

  • A sauna blanket needs to be wiped off with a cleaning product. A healthy one of course. A small pain.
  • Delivery took approximately one month in my case. (Note: the company is headquartered in Australia and sources materials from Germany, Australia, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and China. Final assembly of products occurs in China.)

Accessory suggestions: I feel the cotton waffle sauna blanket insert that the company sells is a good add on. Without it, you need to use a large towel, socks, clothing. With it, just hop in.

There are various sauna blanket brands reviewed here. I will not be trying the others, but based on the information in the link I remain happy with my choice.

Reminder note: always read the Health and Safety Precautions and User Manual.
