Essential Oils for Anxiety

Essential oils can help still the mind and create calm. This is because our olfactory system is directly linked to the parts of the brain that process emotions. When we inhale the molecules from essential oils, they are carried to the brain and can influence our mood and emotions.

Some of those that are effective for anxiety, that increase the calm:

1. Lavender Oil

This purple flowered plant produces an oil known for its gentle, floral aroma that works wonders to ease the mind, reduce feelings of tension and therefore promote relaxation.

For restless nights, consider diffusing lavender oil in your bedroom. A few drops in a warm bath can have a calming effect. However, as with all essential oils, it is essential to be aware of any adverse reactions or sensitivities.

2. Chamomile Oil

Chamomile, with its petite daisy-like flowers, is another well-known anxiety relief plant. The oil has compounds that have been shown to calm the nerves and promote a sense of peace.

Incorporating chamomile into a daily routine can be as simple as adding a few drops to a carrier oil and massaging it onto your temples. Be mindful of dosage and possible interactions, especially if you have plant allergies.

3. Bergamot Oil

Bergamot oil is derived from the peel of the bergamot orange. It is a bright and uplifting scent.

Inhalation of bergamot can uplift one’s spirits. Note that bergamot, being citrus-based, can be photosensitive, and it is advisable not to apply it on the skin before sun exposure.

4. Ylang-Ylang Oil

Ylang-ylang oil is from the flowers of the Cananga tree that is native to the rainforests of Asia. The oil is known for promoting feelings of joy and warmth.

Simply inhaling ylang-ylang can take you to a place of comfort, melting away worries. When using it, try adding a few drops to your lotion or cream for both aromatic and skin-nourishing benefits. Always check for sensitivity, as individual reactions can vary.

5. Frankincense Oil

Frankincense has been revered for its deep, grounding aroma since ancient times.

It has meditative properties and is a go-to for moments of introspection. Try adding a drop to your wrist. As always, moderation is key, and one should be aware of any skin reactions.

Personal note: Frankincense in a defuser is helpful to drive away the darkness.

6. Vetiver Oil

Earthy and robust, vetiver oil is distilled from the roots of the vetiver grass. Often described as grounding, it can anchor a wandering mind and bring about clarity.

A small dab of vetiver on the soles of your feet or behind your ears can create a calming shield. Its thick, potentially sticky consistency, and unique aroma might be an acquired taste for some, so it’s good to start with smaller amounts.

Additional: Young Living Oil’s Stress Away is a blend of Capaiba, Line, Cedarwood, Vanilla, Ocoteo and Lavender. Its first note is vanilla and then the rest settle the mind. Some prefer this blend for calming.
